Luhansk Nature Reserve was set up to preserve nature complexes of virgin steppes, flood-lands and gully forests, which are typical and unique for the steppe landscape zone, in their natural state and with all their components combined; to study natural processes and phenomena taking place in them; to work out scientific principles of environment protection.

Principal research areas are:

– monitoring main ecological regimes of nature reserves; studying seasonal phenomena in flora and fauna;

– working out scientific principles of expanding the Luhansk Nature Reserve’s territory and forming the network of regional nature reserves;

– integrated populational-and-biological and chorological studies of rare and endangered plant and animal species in the ecosystems of the Luhansk Nature Reserve; working out measures for preservation of these species under conditions of reserve successions.
