'Sofiyivka' Dendrological Park

The main lines of Denropark’s activities are:

– studying natural and cultural flora in the South forest-steppe zone of Ukraine;

– conserving living-plants collections including rare and endangered species, as well as landscape plant compositions of the park in man-made conditions of the South forest-steppe zone of Ukraine;

– doing research into plant introduction, acclimatization and protection, as well as studying issues of landscape park designing on the dendropark base;

– developing the technology for propagation of the most valuable plant species and for their cultural introduction;

– research and education work in the field of botany and nature protection, ornamental horticulture and landscape architecture.

The list of the major research results:

I. Improvement of technologies for vegetative propagation of different cultures using hardened and green shoots in the open soil, artificial-fog facility and greenhouse.

2. Selection of optimum methods of decorative-form grafting into the root collar and on the stem.

3. The architectural plan has been implemented of constructing the ‘Sofiyivka’ dendrological park on the basis of materialized episodes from Homer’s «Odyssey» poem.

4. Doctor of biology Kosenko I. S., kandidate of biology Moroz O. K., candidate of biology Mitin V. V. have won the NAS Yuriev Prize for the series of monographs: «Corylus L. in Ukraine», «Dog-Rose Introduction in the Forest-Steppe Zone of Ukraine», «Multiplication Biology of Plants Introduced in ‘Sofiyivka’ Dendropark», «Selfrooted Roses in the Forest-Steppe Zone of Ukraine».

5. Doctor of biology Kosenko I. S. has obtained two invention certificates for a method of seed sowing and sowing tree-plants seeds.

International awards:

Grabovy V. M. is the winner of the Prof. Yan Zachwatowycz ICOMOS international contest in Poland for his work: «The Concept of Revalorization of the Elysian Fields Site in the ‘Sofiyivka’ Dendrological Park».
