M. M. Grishko National Botanical Garden (NBG) is the leading research institution in Ukraine on plant introduction and acclimatization, as well as a monument of park art of the ÕÕ century. The staff of the Garden is 325 employees, including 75 scientists, with 13 doctors and 54 candidates of science being among them. NBG is a member of International Association of Botanic Gardens and the International Organization on Protecting European Flora – ‘Planta Europa’. The Garden carries out significant research towards conservation of rare and endangered plants under the Convention on Wild Flora and Fauna Conservation, ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on October 29, 1996.
The research is done in the following areas:
– plant introduction, acclimatization and selection;
– conservation of biological diversity and plants ex situ and in situ;
– biological fundamentals of park science and park management;
– increasing the species diversity in cultural phytocoenoses;
– chemical interaction of plants (allelopathy);
– medical botany, integrated use of medicinal plants;
– biological indication and ecological monitoring of environment pollution.
Unique collections (12,000 species, varieties and forms) of flower-ornamental, medicinal, fruit, vegetable, spice, forage and industrial plants from all botanical-and-geographic regions of the world have been formed. These plants are of utmost importance for domestic economy and scientific experiments, especially for the conservation of plant diversity. One of the best in Europe collections of tropical and subtropical plants (3022 specimens) including 600 species, forms and varieties of orchids, was awarded the status of the National Asset of Ukraine by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The National Botanical Garden is well-known for its science schools and fundamental studies in conservation of rare and endangered plants, in chemical interaction of plants (allelopathy), biological principles of park science, biology of tropical and subtropical plants, in problems of space botany. Academicians M. M. Grishko and À. Ì. Grodzinsky, whose contribution to the development of biological science is known all over the world, were both directors of the Garden.
The Garden offers for introduction new varieties of flower-ornamental, fruit, forage, spice and vegetable plants produced in NBG.
All varieties developed in NBG are in full conformity with current international standards in terms of their ornamental, biological and economic characteristics. These varieties have new combinations of properties, special colours and flower forms, earlier terms of blooming and fruiting. NBG developed special energy-efficient cultivation methods for them. Planting material is produced by order.
