Research of the Institute is focused on working out scientific fundamentals for conservation and rational use of biodiversity as a basis for sustainable development of Ukraine, it is concerned with:

– study of fauna, evolutional and morphological basis of phylogeny and systematics of wildlife in Ukraine;

– elaboration of scientific principles for conservation and rational use of wildlife resources; wildlife monitoring under anthropogenic impacts;

– elaboration of zoological fundamentals for improving animal and plant productivity.

The following science schools work at the Institute:

– ‘Evolutionary morphology’ (school founder – academician I. I. Schmalhausen);

– ‘Recent and fossil vertebrates’ (school founder – academician I. G. Pidoplichko);

– ‘Zoology of invertebrates and parasitiology’ (school founder – academician O. P. Markevich);
