In 2002 the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG) created and launched a first version of a Web portal in bioinformatics, genomics, structural biology and molecular medicine as its inner bioinformational resource (www.bioua.org.ua ).
The Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics incorporates 15 research departments and 4 laboratories that focus on investigating fundamental problems of molecular biology and genetics:
– the study of proteins and nucleic acids structure and functions;
– the study of translation of genetic information and genetic mutation patterns, the realization of these processes at the level of molecule, cell and organism;
– studies in the field of novel biotechnologies and gene therapy;
– computational studies of nucleic acid and protein structure and functioning.
Core Competencies of IMBG are: genomics; genetic and cellular engineering; proteomics; bioinformatics.
IMBG has the following science schools:
1. school of translation mechanisms of genetic information (headed by Prof. A. V. Elskaya, NAS academician, Dr. Sc.);
2. school of structure and function of nucleic acids (headed by V. V. Filonenko, Cand. Sc.);
3. school of cell regulatory mechanisms (headed by Prof. V. A. Kordium, NAS corresponding member and academician of Acad. Med. Sci. of Ukraine);
4. school of molecular genetics (headed by Prof. S. S. Maliuta, Dr. Sc., NAS corresponding member);
5. school of molecular oncogenetics (headed by Prof. A. V. Ryndich, Dr. Sc., NAS corresponding member);
6. school of biosynthesis of nucleic acids (headed by Prof. V. M. Kavsan, Dr. Sc., NAS corresponding member);
7. school of cell population genetics (headed by Prof. V. A. Kunakh, Dr. Sc., NAS corresponding member).
IMBG proposes for cooperative commercialization:
Methods of disease prevention, diagnostics and treatment:
1. Development and application of test-systems for genetic diagnostics of severe hereditary diseases, hereditary disposition to development of mass pathologies, oncologic diseases in particular
Working models of test systems:
2. A test-system for DNA testing of Ph-positive chronic myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leucosis.
3. Development of a technology of fibroblast cultivation for the treatment of massive burns.
