Principal research areas of the Institute are:

– study of molecular, genetic and biochemical mechanisms of metabolic regulation in yeasts and development of novel biotechnological processes and products based on these microorganisms;

– study of molecular mechanisms of regulation of proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis in normal and tumor cells in humans and animals.

The following science schools work at the Institute:

– ‘Study of biochemical and genetic mechanisms of flavinogenesis and methanol metabolism in non-conventional yeasts’, founded by Prof. G. M. Shavlovsky and presently headed by NAS corresponding member A. A. Sibirny;

– ‘Mechanisms of regulation of cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis’, founded by Prof. S. I. Kusen and presently headed by Prof. R. S. Stoika.

Studies proposed for cooperative commercialization:

– development of enzymatic kits and biosensors for the analysis of glucose, ethanol, methanol and formaldehyde;

– species-specific immune sera for application in forensic assays.
