The Institute carries out research in the following areas:
– studying the structure, physical-and-chemical properties and biological functions of complex protein and supramolecular systems;
– identifying biochemical mechanisms of metabolism regulation by means of low-molecular substances (vitamins, coenzymes, peptides, metal ions etc.);
– developing advanced biotechnologies (new methods of production and practical application of biologically active substances for medicine and veterinary as well as biosensors for medicine, industry and agriculture).
The Institute has science schools in: biochemistry of nervous system (O. V. Palladin, V. K. Lishko, Ya. V. Belik); muscle biochemistry (O. V. Palladin, D. L. Ferdman, M. D. Kursky, S. O. Kosterin); biochemistry of vitamins and coenzymes (O. V. Palladin, S. I. Vinokur, R. V. Chagovets, V. P. Vendt, A. G. Khalmuradov, G. V. Donchenko); regulation of metabolism and biosynthesis of proteins and lipids (M. F. Guly, D. O. Melnichuk, N. M. Gula); molecular immunology of biochemistry (S. V. Komisarenko).
The Institute proposes for commercialization or cooperative production: methods for screening the status of human hemostasis system by means of either quantitative immunochemical determination of fibrinogen and D-dimer concentration in blood or by a set of diagnostic methods on the basis of blood coagulation proteins and enzymes of snake venoms (determination of over 20 hemostasis parameters); industrial technologies of virus- and prion-safe protein preparations from human blood plasma (clotting factors VIII and IX, specific and nonspecific immunoglobulins, thrombin, ceruloplasmin, albumin etc.) for intravascular administration; a method for isolating highly purified human thrombin, which is a component of fibrin adhesive; a plasminogen-based thrombolytic preparation for treatment of ophthalmic diseases; MEBIPHON – an anti-tumor medicine produced on the basis of some organophosphorus compounds; development of advanced technologies to produce GLUCOSOXIDASE and CATALASE from Penicillium vitale and their use in medicine; a drug regenerating cell membranes in various intoxications and disturbances of viscera functions; PANTERON – a preparation for treatment of some dysfunctions in male genital system; CALMIVID – a preparation for treatment of human osteoporosis; VITAMIN D3 (a water-soluble form) for babies; MAE – a novel cardioprotective medical agent based on N-acylethanolamine, possessing anti-ischemic and anti-arrhythmic properties; an efficient vitamin E analogue with a shorter side chain; a method for cataract treatment on the basis of vitamin E; development of chemo- and immunosensors for environment monitoring.
The Institute possesses a unique collection of hybridomas-producers of monoclonal antibodies for diagnosing tuberculosis, hemostasis system, diabetes, pertussis etc.
Beside research departments, the Institute also has such divisions as: Biotechnology Branch of the Biochemistry Department of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Biotechnology Information Centre, Centre of Analytical Research of Hemostasis System (CARHS), Experimental Biological Centre (EBC).
