The Institute carries out research into high-relevance areas of chemical science and issues of water-basins protection:

– water chemistry and technology (NAS academician L. A. Kulsky, NAS academician A. T. Pilipenko, NAS academician V. V.Goncharuk, NAS corresponding member K. E. Machorin);

– colloid chemistry (academician A. V. Dumansky, academician F. D. Ovcharenko, NAS academician V. V. Goncharuk, corresponding member O. D. Kurilenko, NAS corresponding member B. U. Kornilovych, NAS corresponding member U. I. Tarasevych);

– analytical chemistry (NAS academician A. T. Pilipenko).

The Institute was founded in 1968. In 1980 it was named after Acad. A. V. Dumansky, the founder of Ukrainian Colloid Chemistry.

Acad. F. D. Ovcharenko (1968), Corr. Member O. D. Kurilenko (1968-1975), Acad. A. T. Pilipenko (1975-1988) were directors of the Institute. Since 1988 the Institute has been headed by NAS academician V. V. Goncharuk.

Scientists of the Institute have made a significant contribution to the development of the world and Ukrainian science. Many researchers of the Institute were awarded with Ukraine, Ukrainian SSR and USSR state prizes and prizes named after prominent scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Since 1979 the journal «Khimiya i Tekhnologiya Vody» (Journal of Water Chemistry and Technology) has been issued. The journal publishes papers on fundamental and applied aspects of water protection, is translated and distributed abroad by ‘Allerton press, Inc.’.

The Institute offers novel technologies and equipment for water purification:

– a technology for producing pure drinking water on water plants;

– technologies for producing pure drinking water from surface and underground sources;

– technologies and methods for disinfecting and conditioning water;

– small-sized plants to produce high-quality drinking water for individual and group use;

– technologies, equipment and reagents for removing toxic impurities (radionuclides included) from drinking and waste waters;

– technologies and equipment for deep water demineralization, membrane methods for sea-water desalination;

– an integrated technology for purifying and desalinating sewage waters of household waste dumps, with all products of water treatment being disposed of;

– biotechnologies for purifying household and industrial sewage water;

– a technology for neutralizing of pesticide-containing wastewater;

– a technology for fotocatalytic liquid-phase treatment of wastewater to remove organic impurities;

– an alternative technology for petroleum removal by natural sorbents;

– complete analysis and certification of natural, drinking and waste waters, biotesting of drinking water.
