The principal research areas of the Institute are:

– studying mechanisms and reactivity of organic compounds, including reactions under conditions of homogenous and inter-phase catalysis;

– studying physico-chemical properties of fossil coal and carbon materials with a view to developing methods of their processing and rational use;

– synthesis, structure and properties of heterocyclic compounds, including their biologically active varieties.

Science schools working at the Institute:

Studies of organic reactions mechanisms, aimed at developing new materials and technologies (A. F. Popov, Dr. Chem. Sc., NAS academician)

Studies of chemical and physico-chemical properties of coal to develop methods and technologies of its rational use (Saranchuk V. I., Dr. Tech. Sc., Prof.)

Thermodynamics of intermolecular interactions and metal-complex analysis (Ye. S. Rudakov, Dr. Chem. Sc., NAS corresponding member)

Physical chemistry of hemolytic reactions, theory of elementary act and mathematical modeling of kinetics of complex chemical processes (Yo. O. Opeyda, Dr. Chem. Sc., Prof.)

Development of reactions of condensed heterocycles formation and studying their chemical properties with a view to search for new medicinal preparations (V. I. Dulenko, Dr. Chem. Sc., Prof.)

The Institute proposes for cooperative finalization or commercialization:

– epoxy optical glues with an increased refraction index, intended for optical electronics;

– technologies for producing medicinal preparations such as bifonazole, clotrimazole, bifenate, carbacetame, cinnarisine, and highly active disinfectants;

– a trimer of phosphonitril chloride as a monomer for producing thermally resistant rubbers (caoutchoucs), polymeric membranes and solid electrolytes;

– a substance to dissolve deposits in industrial steam boilers and water-supply systems;

– a technology for integrated processing of brown and salt coal, production of high-temperature humic substances and reductive gases from brown coal;

– activated coal produced from apricot stones;

– a technology of gasification of coal-preparation waste and facilities for its implementation;

– a technology for obtaining a new sort of liquid fuel for boiler-ranges of heat power plants and public-utility boiler-houses;

– regulators of technological properties of industrial disperse systems: emulsion fuel compositions, suspension varieties of fuel (water-coal and oil-water-coal fuels), drill solutions etc;

– disposal of rocket-fuel components and its oxidants;

– a technology for obtaining thermally swelling graphite and its use.
