The research of the Institute is focused on:
development of energy- and resource-saving technologies in various sectors of national economy through improving the efficiency of natural gas use; development of technologies to process and use alternative off-balance fuels in transport and power-generation facilities for distributed heating and power supply; processing of factory and domestic waste, environment protection from pollutions.
The following science schools work at the Institute:
– processes and equipment in heat-and-power engineering;
– industrial ecology;
– metallurgical heat engineering.

technologies and equipment to use natural gas, petroleum gas, coal-bed methane and biogas as motor fuel for transport and stationary inner-combustion engines; automobile gas-filling compressor stations; technologies of motor transport re-equipment to use compressed natural gas; a technology of propellant production from gas condensate; a technology and equipment for circulite and siopor production; a technology and equipment for producing mineral wool insulation materials; a technology and equipment for distributed heating of housing estates and industrial facilities; devices for contact water heating, radiant heaters, small- and medium-capacity boilers; high-temperature high-stability recuperators; a technology and equipment for updating high- and medium-power hot-water boilers; low-emission burners and equipment to reduce nitrogen oxides content when burning natural gas; burners and methods of industrial and heating boiler conversion for biogas combustion; high-efficiency heating and thermal furnaces; tunnel kilns for brick firing; high-efficiency soakers; equipment for out-of-furnace heating and heat treatment of products; burners for high-speed heating of furnaces for various purposes; processes of metal reduction from oxides, metal heating and refining; industrial technologies of pellets metallization in shaft furnaces by oxidizing pyrolysis products; technologies for obtaining thermally swallen graphite to be used in construction and as a absorbent of oil-products spillages with subsequent regeneration; technologies for high-quality iron powder production; technologies of producing all-purpose technological atmospheres for chemico-thermal processing of metals and alloys; a technology and equipment for upgrading steel-smelting processes; effective technologies and equipment for ladle warming in continuous steel casting; technologies for restoration, maintenance and corrosion protection of machine parts; technologies for disposal of persistent organic pollutants; plasma technologies.
