Lines of the Institute’s activities:
– developing novel efficient environment-friendly technologies of combustion and gasification of domestic coals with a view to using this fuel in the power sector of Ukraine;
– thermal and electrophysical studies aimed at upgrading the efficiency of converting thermal energy into electrical energy;
– development and introduction of advanced diagnostics methods and preventing the emissions of harmful pollutants into the environment at thermal power plants.
Some major developments:
1. A device for identifying bullets and barrels of firearms has been designed on the basis of optical method of surface investigations. It was awarded the 2002 State Prize of Ukraine.
2. Adaptation of the up-to-date circulating fluidized bed (CFB) coal combustion technologies was effected for Ukrainian steam and high-ash coal. Foreign boiler-manufacturing corporations developed detailed documentation of CFB boiler unit for 210 MWt electric power facility. Construction of the unit has been completed at Starobeshiv TPP.
Scientific schools:
1. New thermal processing technologies of solid fuels.
2. Investigation of elementary processes in low-temperature plasma.
The list of developments ready for commercialization:
1. A detailed design of 10 MWt thermal demonstration unit for pressurized combustion and gasification of high-ash steam coal having ash content up to 50 % without gas and fuel oil. Its coal conversion coefficient is up to 99 %, sulfur and nitrogen oxide release is below 100 mg/nm3.
2. A CFB steam-air blowing gas generator having the capacity of up to 500 kg/year for gasification of bituminous coal with the ash content of up to 20-60 %. Gasification products can be used for replacing the natural gas in power industry and metallurgy. The expected degree of coal conversion could amount to 97 %, emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides would be 200 mg/nm3 at most.
3. An ignitor of spouted-bed coal for powerful burner of steam generator. It is intended for igniting low-reactive coal without gas and fuel oil in 50 MWt thermal burners and for igniting anthracite schtib and lean coal with the ash content of up to 30-40 %.
4. A system of preceding electrode charging prior to electrostatic filter and a control device for preceding electrode-cleaning mechanism of TPP electrostatic filter. This system ensures an improvement in the dust-cleaning efficiency in electrostatic filters due to charging of dust particles and periodic electrode cleaning of each field at different time intervals.
5. A burner with thermochemical fuel preparation for low-reactive high-ash coal combustion.
