The scope of scientific activities covers general problems of functioning and development of power industry.

Main research areas:

– scientific fundamentals for forecasting the development of power industry and energy consumption, system analysis and optimization of the energy complex structure, branch and regional systems of power industry and fuel-and-energy balances, creation of database and software for forecasting;

– research into problems of structural development of the power industry in Ukraine, key lines of developing fuel-and-energy complex, with account being taken of the ecological requirements, forming of fuel-and-energy balances and optimization of fuel-and-energy resources import & export;

– system analysis and forecasting of R&D progress in power industry, research into main ways of improving energy efficiency and energy conservation, forecasting and realization of energy conservation potential;

– scientific fundamentals of power industry management in the new economic conditions, forming of normative-and-legal framework and economic environment for functioning and development of power industry.

The scientific school on the development of theoretical bases, mathematical models and software intended for the analysis and optimization of the development of fuel-and-energy complex and improving power efficiency in the economy and social sphere of the country was created under the supervision of NAS academician M. M. Kulik.

General problems of upgrading the power industry of Ukraine were solved on the basis of research results of the Institute. They are: long-term forecasts of the economic development and inter-branch shifts, the need in fuel-and-energy resources, taking energy conservation into account; identifying the lines of rational development of the fuel-and-energy complex in Ukraine and its branch systems; working out measures towards modernization of existing and construction of new power facilities, with account being taken of the rational nature use. Examination of the European energy-markets structures and formation of the equilibrium prices for energy resources was done in the framework of cooperation with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Vienna, Austria).

The Institute achieved a number of results of national importance:

– working out, analysis of implementation and amendment of the Integrated State Program of Ukraine for Energy Conservation;

– elaboration of the project ‘Power Strategy of Ukraine out to 2030 and Further’.

The Institute proposes for cooperative upgrading and commercialization mathematical and software-and-information complexes and means for:

– forecasting and optimization of future structure of generating capacity of electrical power systems;

– economic-and-mathematical modeling and optimization of coal industry development;

– system modeling of equilibrium prices on electric energy markets.
