The principal research areas of the Institute are:
1. physicochemistry and thermodynamics of multicomponent metallic systems and liquid state of slag-metal melts (basic studies of the effect of interatomic interaction processes on the formation of structure and properties of melts; studies of the effects of interaction of these melts in iron and steel production);
2. scientific fundamentals of ferro-carbon alloys shaping and control of their structure and properties (development of theoretical principles for optimizing chemical composition and production technologies of special-purpose steels, standardization of existing branded structure of steel for rolling products, development of new economically-alloyed constructional steel and technologies of their deformation-thermal treatment);
3. research and development of new technologies, equipment and control systems in production of iron, steel, rolling products (development of theoretical principles for upgrading technological processes, taking into account raw materials and energy considerations of facilities operation, perfection of existing and development of new technologies, determination of the rational modes of equipment operation).
The Institute has science schools in the following areas:
– low-coke and coke-free technologies of primary iron production;
– theory of crystallization of ferrous-carbon melts;
– development of rational metallurgical facilities and their operation modes, automation of technological lines control;
– deformation-thermal hardening of constructional steel;
– theoretical fundamentals of sheet steel rolling processes.
The Institute offers the following technologies for commercialization in various areas of steel industry:
– burden materials and a technology for domain swimming trunks on combined blow;
– the equipment and charging procedures of blast furnaces, calculation of rational filling sequences, the control and management of the burden distribution;
– pig-iron desulphurization with dispersed magnesium forced into liquid metal in carrier-gas flow (a technology and equipment), a technology of producing granulated magnesium;
– converter steel production with imposed weak electrical and magnetic fields;
– obtaining continuous-casted billets of small sections with reducing the size and number of non-metal inclusions;
– use of the non-drived working stands for continuous rolling of section steel and rolling-slitting;
– a two-stage cooling of wire rod on advanced wire rolling mills;
– manufacturing rolled products of boron-containing steel for cold heading and extrusion;
– manufacturing hot-rolled etched skin-passed sheet steel, thermo-treated in a protective atmosphere, instead of cold-rolled one.
