Institute’s principal tasks are: fundamental and applied research in hydrometeorology and basic environment monitoring; scientific and methodological provision of effective operation of hydro-meteorological and other prompt services of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine; coordination of research in hydrometeorology in Ukraine.
Main study areas of the Institute are:
– investigations of physical processes in atmosphere and hydrosphere;
– development of numerical and physical-and-statistical weather forecasting techniques of various lead time (short-, medium- and long-term one), including forecasts of natural meteorological disasters;
– study of physical and ecological mechanisms of climate formation and changes; mathematical modeling of regional climate, its relation to the global one, and peculiarities of its effect on the Ukrainian economy;
– study of physical, physiological, ecological mechanisms and patterns of
atmosphere and bedding effect on agricultural crops and crop yield forecasting;
– investigation of elemental hydro-meteorological phenomena and patterns of their time and space distribution;
– study of water-bodies regime and its forming factors;
– development of automated systems for forecasting spring and rain floods;
– integrated study of hydro-meteorological conditions and economic activities on environment pollution;
– study of the effect of natural and man-caused factors on surface-water chemical composition and quality in Ukraine;
– development of technical devices, systems and techniques to obtain and process hydro-meteorological information, development of information technologies;
– investigation of hydro-meteorological regime and hydrochemistry of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov;
– development of new and upgrading of existing instruments for hydro-meteorological measurements;
– drafting normative base and standards in the field of hydrometeorology and environment monitoring.
The following science schools work at the Institute:
– ‘Theoretical studies in cloud physics and weather modification’ (founded by Prof. M. V. Buykov, Dr. of Phys. and Math.);
– ‘Ecosystem concept of agricultural meteorology’ (founded by Prof. V. P. Dmytrenko, Dr. of Geog.).
The Institute proposes for cooperative commercialization:
– a system for on-line receiving and processing of digital information coming from NOAA meteorological satellites;
– application of isotope technologies in hydro-ecological studies;
– information-and-analytical system ‘Chemical composition and quality of surface water in Ukraine’.
