The main study areas of the Institute are:

– prospecting for metals, oil and gas;

– development of information technologies;

– protection of undermined buildings and structures;

– prediction and prevention of rock bursts and gas-dynamic phenomena;

– solving mining-related problems;

– studying manifestations of rock pressure and providing mine working stability;

– mine-surveying research;

– geoecology.

The Institute has a science school in mining geophysics.

Developments for cooperative commercialization:

– identification of methane accumulation zones as a source of alternative fuel.
