The Institute of Geography is a leading Ukrainian scientific institution engaged in natural-geographic, socio-geographic and cartographic studies. It does research into:

– elaborating theoretical principles of fundamental geographic studies;

– the general trend of nature development, forecasting changes of its components;

– the state of and changes in current and ancient landscapes and their elements;

– constructive-geographic trends of regional nature management in relation to the development of mineral-resource base of Ukraine;

– the theory and methods of studying geographical aspects of Science-Nature interaction and its general and regional impacts;

– changes in the territorial-branch structure of Ukrainian economy and in its social sphere;

– elaboration of geographical principles of sustainable economic, social and environmental development of Ukrainian regions;

– cartographic studies of characteristic changes in landscapes, the territorial organization of economy, population distribution and impacts of Science-Nature interaction;

– developing a concept of the National Atlas of Ukraine, compiling and manufacturing the Atlas and other cartographic products.

The following science schools function at the Institute:

– the stage-by-stage character of nature development and rational nature management – headed by NAS corresponding member O. M. Marynych;

– structural geomorphology – headed by Dr. of Geogr. V. P. Palienko;

– geographical principles for improving the territorial organization of society and forming complexes in material production – headed by NAS corresponding member L.H.Rudenko.

Scientific results of the international level:

The Atlas of Ukraine (an electronic version of the pilot project of the National Atlas of Ukraine) – supervised by NAS corresponding member L. H. Rudenko.

The Institute proposes for joint completion and commercialization:

– the National Atlas of Ukraine;

– recommendations towards eliminating impacts of Science-Nature interaction in the context of sustainable development of Ukrainian territories;

– a series of maps for higher and secondary schools.
