Main research areas of the Institute are:

– studies of tectonics, structure, geodynamics and evolution of continental and oceanic lithosphere; development of three-dimensional integrated geophysical and petrophysical models of geological structures with a view to forecasting mineral deposits;

– development of technological automated systems for processing and interpreting geophysical information;

– geophysical studies of the environment, aimed at predicting seismic hazards and other hazardous natural phenomena;

– elaboration of scientific principles of nonlinear unbalanced geophysics; deveopment of advanced technologies and equipment to intensify extraction of energy resources.

The following science schools work at the Institute:

1. Interactive systems of comprehensive interpretation of geophysical data with a view to solving regional and geological prospecting problems in Ukraine. The school is headed by NAS academician V. I. Starostenko.

2. Dynamics of irregular media and pulse geotechnologies, headed by NAS corresponding member V. A. Danylenko.

The Institute proposes for joint commercialization:

– automated systems for comprehensive interpretation of geophysical data;

– the Atlas of seismic activity of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (in Ukrainian and English);

– the geothermal Atlas of Ukraine – maps of heat flow, thermal models and maps of geoenergy resources of Ukraine;

– integrated geodynamic models of tectonosphere in intermediate zones from Eurasia and North America to the Pacific Ocean and seismogenic zones of the Pacific Ocean margin and the Crimea;

– regional index of earthquakes for the Alpine folded zone;

– database and Atlas of isoseismic lines for strong earthquakes of the Vrancea region, regional epicenter maps of the Carpathian region;

– a density lithosphere model for Europe;

– a technology for intensifying extraction of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons from subterranean formations;

– seismic microstructure of urban territories of Ukrainian cities, determination of seismic-engineering conditions for construction sites, facilities of high environmental hazard (NPPs, HESs, hydro-engineering structures, chemical and military plants);

– the analysis of seismic hazards for Kyiv and its relation to geological-engineering conditions of the megalopolis, recommendations towards control of current activation of hazardous geological processes in megalopolises (Kyiv is taken as an example).
