The Transcarpathian Regional Centre of Social, Economic and Humanitarian Research was founded in 1995 by NAS Presidium resolution of May 24, 1995 ¹ 149 in order to carry out applied social, economic and humanitarian research aimed at speeding up the reforming of the social and economic system of Transcarpathia, analyzing historical and ethnocultural problems of the region, providing its deeper integration into the nationwide processes as well as into European regional structures.

The task of the Centre is also to coordinate the activities of NAS research and production facilities, research at higher educational and industrial institutions in Transcarpathia.

Principal research areas:

– studies of social and economic development of the Carpathian region (Euroregion), mechanisms of forming foreign economic policy in the near-border territories, problems of regional labour market;

– studies of the place and role of subregional trans-border cooperation in solving current regional and nationwide problems of Ukraine;

– investigation into social and political issues of public opinion on the urgent problems of internal and foreign policy of Ukraine and the ways of rational development of Transcarpathia within the Ukrainian nation;

– comprehensive studies of history and culture of Transcarpathia in its relation to the history of the whole Ukraine and neighbouring countries, formation of the Ukrainian ethnos in Transcarpathia, studies towards protecting and preserving the cultural heritage of the area;

– scientific and practical activities in environmental subjects, working out scientific recommendations towards improving the environmental situation in the region.
