The Western Science Centre under the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry for Education and Science of Ukraine is the basic organizing and coordinating link of the regional system of R&D and innovative activities in the West of Ukraine. It was formed for dealing with main socio-economic and cultural challenges of the region.
The Western Science Centre joins scholars of the seven oblasts in the West of Ukraine, those of: Volyn, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Rivne, Transcarpathia and Chernivtsy.
NAS academician M. I. Dolishny is the Head of the Western Science Centre.
The following scientific schools, which are known in Ukraine and abroad, are concentrated in the West of Ukraine: statistical physics and phase-transition theory (founded by NAS academician I. Yuhnovsky); deformed solid body mechanics, optimization of processes in engineering and nature (founded by NAS academician Ya. Pidstryhach; now headed by NAS corresponding members Ya. Burak and G. Kit); fracture mechanics (founded by NAS academician V. Panasiuk; now led by NAS corresponding members O. Andreykiv, V. Pohmursky and Z. Nazarchuk); crystal chemistry of intermetallic compounds (founded by Prof. Ye. Gladyshevsky and Prof. O. Bodak); thermoelectricity (founded by NAS academician L. Anatychuk); regional economics (founded by NAS academician M. Dolishny); history and literature (founded by NAS academician Ya. Isayevych and professor Ya. Dashkevych).
Priority areas of research, coordinating and development activities are:
systems for control and ecological regulation of the region development; border-area cooperation;
development and practical implementation of resource-saving, power-saving and environment-friendly technologies in instrument-making, mechanical and power engineering;
development and commercialization of technologies to strengthen structural materials, methods to prevent corrosion in trunk pipelines;
raising gas-extraction and oil production in the Fore-Carpathian area;
rational use and preservation of natural resources in the Carpathian mountains and the Dnister, Tysa and Western Bug river basins;
development and implementation of informatization systems in the regions oblasts;
preservation and restoration of folk arts and crafts in the region;
studies of art landmarks in the region.
The abovementioned lines are the key elements of specialized integrated programs concerned with innovative, R&D, socio-economic development of the West of Ukraine, with the contribution of the Western Science Centre and its institutions, to interregional collaboration in science and education.
