Principal lines of the activities of Donetsk Science Centre (DSC) are:

– reshaping the structure of fuel-and-power, metallurgical, chemical and machine-building complexes of Donetsk region;

– environmental and technological safety in coal-mining;

– protection and follow-up care of the immune system of Donbas population;

– environment protection and effective recycling of secondary raw materials;

– personnel and methodological provision of innovation activities development.

The sphere of DSC activities covers two oblasts – those of Donetsk and Luhansk. Today its network incorporates 15 NAS institutions, 140 industrial R&D and 34 higher educational establishments of the 3-4-th accreditation levels.

Research institutions of DSC employ over 19 thousand employees, among whom there are 650 doctors of sciences and over 4500 candidates of sciences. 14 NAS academicians and corresponding members direct research activities in the region.

Academy institutions of Donbas have produced a brilliant galaxy of scientists – founders of leading scientific schools in the sphere of fundamental sciences: mathemathics – NAS academician Ya. B. Lopatinski, academician I. I. Danilyuk, academician I. V. Skrypnik, NAS corresponding member G.D.Suvorov; mechanics – academician O. S. Kosmodamiansky, academician V. P. Shevchenko, corresponding member P. V. Kharlamov, corresponding member I. L. Povkh; physics – academician A. A. Galkin, corresponding member K.B. Tolpygo, corresponding member B. I. Beresnev, corresponding member L. T. Tsymbal, corresponding member E. A. Zavadsky; regional economy – academician O. M. Alymov, academician M.H. Chumachenko, academician O. I. Amosha, corresponding member M. I. Ivanov; physical and organic chemistry – academician L. M. Litvinenko, academician A. F.Popov, corresponding member Ye. S. Rudakov, corresponding member S. M. Baranov; botany – corresponding member Ye. M. Kondratyuk, corresponding member F. L. Shchepotyev, corresponding member V. P. Tarabrin; economic law – academician V. K. Mamutov etc. Numerous disciples and followers continue the cause started by them.

Taking into account the nation’s need in new types of technology and equipment, scientists of the NAS institutions, located in Donbas, just in the last 2 years produced over 2000 developments, which facilitate the solution of important problems in various spheres of economy.

NAS scientists took an active part in working out the program of scientific and technological development of Donetsk oblast industries. The Program sets priorities in the development of basic industries of the region, formulates tasks facing fundamental and applied science.

NAS institutions make significant contributions to the work of influential international organizations such as UNESCO, IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and the International Council of Scientific Unions etc. Their scientists carry out research and produce applied developments under assignments of foreign research organizations and industrial companies, sell licenses of their own research-intensive products.
