Principal areas of Center’s activities are designing new methods and systems for remote sensing of the Earth (RSE) from air- and space-borne carriers as well as software support to obtaining and topical handling of RSE information. The teamwork of Center’s researchers and engineers, whose expertise had been acquired in 35 years, enabled them to develop and exploit the air-, space-borne and ground-based systems aimed at remote-sensing operations. They have designed and developed a number of unique radar systems, amongst which are the space- borne radar of the ‘Cosmos-1500/Sich-l’ satellite, airborne multi-frequency radar systems ‘Analog’, ‘Analog - 1’, ‘MARS’ and currently operating ACRS-30. These systems are intended to optimize the techniques for addressing a broad range of practical task-oriented issues, namely, ice reconnaissance, mineral deposit prospecting, prompt detection and monitoring of natural and technological disasters, including hazardous weather conditions, oil-contaminated areas on the sea surface, ice jams on rivers, underfiooded areas and swamplands, subsurface sensing etc.

Besides, the Center is currently focused on developing novel high-resolution space- and airborne radars and is also engaged in topical processing of the RSE-information obtained.

The Center has a science school in remote sensing of the Earth from air- and space-borne carriers, started by professor A. I. Kalmykov, an internationally known expert, Dr. of Phys. and Math., Winner of the Ukrainian SSR State Prize.

Recently, the Center has proposed a number of multi-frequency radar systems for remote sensing of the Earth, namely:

– an air-borne multi-frequency radar system on the basis of AH-74 aircraft (pilot project);

– an air-borne multi-frequency radar system on the basis of AH-140, ‘Delfin’ aircraft (a technical proposal).
