The main fields of research done at the Institute are:

– investigations into low-energy electron/ion interactions with matter;

– development of electrostatic accelerators and nuclear analytical techniques with submicron resolution to study material structure and composition, including biosamples;

– development of instruments for training and research.

The Institute has science schools in:

1. Fundamental and applied studies of nuclear reactions at low energies (headed by NAS academician V. Yu. Storizhko);

2. Quantum electrodynamics (headed by NAS corresponding member P. I. Fomin).

The following newly-developed instrumentation is proposed to be commercialized:

1. a compact nuclear scanning microprobe with an immersion-probe-forming system for material-composition and structure analysis;

2. a laser mass-spectrometer with a coordinate-sensitive detector for fast material-composition analysis;

3. a small-size mass-spectrometer for early diagnostics of stomach diseases, relying on 13C/12C ratio measurements;

4. a helicon ion source with high beam brightness;

5. an inductively-coupled plasma ion source for mass-spectrometer;

6. a multi-cusped ion source with low energy spread;

7. a high-current H-ion source for charged-particle accelerator;

8. a cluster beam source.
