The principal reseach areas of the Institute are:
physics of solid state under extreme conditions;
physics and technology of advanced structural and functional materials.
Researchers of the Institute carry on the traditions of the five science schools formed in the Institute:
– high pressure physics and solid-state spectroscopy (founded by NAS academician O. O. Galkin);
– theory of magnetism (founded by NAS academician V. G. Baryakhtar);
– mesoscopic phenomena in solids (founded by NAS academician V. I. Arkharov);
– theory of lattice dynamics and defects, and biophysics (founded by NAS corresponding member K. B. Tolpygo);
– physics of phase transformations under extreme conditions (founded by NAS corresponding member E. A. Zavadsky).
Developments proposed for commercialization:
– 0,2…0,4 mm gauged brass wire for tools production, conforming to the standards of the best foreign analogues;
– articles made of thermoplastic and thermoreactive polymers possessing the shape memory effect;
– a technology for plastic forming of special-purpose articles with intricate configurations;
– chambers used to study barocryomagnetic effect on the properties of solids and liquids;
– ceramic structural materials and articles;
– a technology for preparing oxide nanopowders for ceramic articles;
– a technology for producing nanocrystalline materials by plastic working;
– a process of manufacturing diamond films and platelets from gaseous phase;
– measuring systems based on intellectual temperature sensors;
– computer systems for data recording and control, intended for updating pilot plants and production facilities (X-ray diffractometers, mass-spectrometers, NEOPHOT light microscope, pressing equipment etc.).
