Principal study areas:

– physics of deep mining processes;

– development of methods for control of rock massif condition;

– development of physico-chemical technologies for preventing coal seam outbursts;

– development of prognostic techniques to predict changes in rock mass and earth surface conditions due to flooding of abandoned mines.

‘Physics of Coal’ science school functions at the Institute.

Projects proposed for joint commercialization:

– a method for predicting outburst hazards at workings in steep coal seams (Industrial Standard of Ukraine KD 12.10.05.01-99);

– a method of distinguishing between sudden coal caving and coal outburst for expert assessment of the gasodynamic accident class (Industrial Standard of Ukraine KD 12.01.05.070-2001);

– a technique to determine accumulation time for critical concentrations of methane or other inflammable hydrocarbons in mine in-seam workings with account being taken of coal sorption characteristics (Local Mine Standard);

– a method for locating gasodynamic accident nucleation sites in in-seam shortwalls (Technical Standard of Ukraine GSTU 101.24647077.001-2003);

– estimation methods for venting a mine coal storage bin at normal operation or in emergencies (Technical Standard of Ukraine GSTU 10.1-04675545-007-2003);

– prevention of sudden coal and gas outbursts during steep seam mining with shield assembly (Industrial Standard of Ukraine SOU 101.00171144.004-2004).
