The Observatory was founded on July 17,1944 on the initiative of NAS academician O. Ya. Orlov 1880 – 1954).
TThe Observatory was founded in 1944 on the initiative of academician O.Ya. Orlov (1880-1954).
The Observatory carries out researches in the following areas:
– positional astronomy and space geodynamics;
– physics of the Sun and solar system bodies;
– physics and evolution of stars and galaxies;
– space plasma physics;
– atmospheric optics;
– astronomical and space instrument making;
– automation of processes of astronomical observations and data reducing.
The Observatory has some science schools carrying out studies in:
1) fundamental astrometry and global geodynamics (founded by academicians O. Ya. Orlov and E. P. Fedorov);
2) dynamics and structure of solar photosphere (founded by professor E. A. Hurtovenko);
3) physics of comets (founded by professor S. K. Vsekhsviatsky).
The Observatory proposes to all interested institutions:
– novel methods and software for observations of space and astronomical objects and treatment of observational data;
– observational data of Ukrainian permanent stations of Global Positioning System (GPS);
– design and customization of achromatic and superachromatic retardation plates;
– software systems for modelling complex gas-dynamics and radiation-transfer problems and calculating spectral line profiles;
– design and customization of portable and mobile systems for monitoring the Earth atmosphere.
