M. M. Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics was founded in 1966. An outstanding Ukrainian theoretical physicist and mathematician academician M. M. Bogolyubov was its founder and first director. The Institute was headed by academician O. S. Davydov in 1973-1988 and by academician O. G. Sitenko in 1988-2002. Since 2002 the director of the Institute has been NAS corresponding member A. G. Zagorodny. NAS academicians O. S. Parasyuk and V.M.Loktev, NAS corresponding members E. G. Petrov and P. I. Fomin work at the Institute. It has 13 scientific departments employing 41 Doctors of Science and 57 Candidates of Science.
The principal research areas of the Institute are: high-energy physics and astrophysics, quantum cosmology; theory of nuclear systems, quantum field theory, theory of symmetries; theory of nonlinear processes in macromolecular structures, nanosystems and plasmas; dynamics of open strongly non-equilibrium physical, biological, economic and information systems.
The Institute continues to develop Bogolyubov–Parasyuk’s, Davydov’s, Sitenko’s and Fomin’s science schools. Its scientists achieved significant results in various fields of theoretical physics, in particular, in the theory of quantum groups, quantum chromodynamics, the theories of high energy nuclear interactions, dusty plasma, high temperature superconductivity, nanosystems. The International Centre of Physics under the NAS Department of Physics and Astronomy has been established on Institute’s base. There are postgraduate courses in theoretical physics, as well as a specialized Academic Council for Doctor of Science and Candidate of Science Degrees. The Centre of Science and Education provides lectures and seminars for undergraduate and graduate students. The Institute is the host for «Ukrainian Physical Journal».
