Principal study areas of the Institute are:

- electronic structure and electronic properties;

- theoretical fundamentals of metal physics;

- phase transformations and phase equillibria;

- physics of strength and plasticity;

- physics of surface.

The Institute has science schools in:

1. nondiffusive transformations in solid state (headed by NAS academician G. V. Kurdyumov);

2. structure of liquids and amorphous metals and alloys (headed by NAS academician V. I. Danilov);

3. physics of strength and plasticity of metallic materials (headed by NAS academician V. N. Gridnev);

4. theory of imperfect crystals (headed by NAS academician A. A. Smirnov and NAS corresponding member M. O. Krivoglaz);

5. spectroscopy of solids (headed by NAS academician V. V. Nemoshkalenko).
