The NAS Institute of the Ukrainian Language is the only research body in the country that carries out synchronic and diachronic investigations at all levels of the structure of Ukrainian, including phonology, morphology, syntax, vocabulary, word-building, phraseology etc. It codifies the Ukrainian Literary Standard in pronunciation, spelling, grammar, word-usage and phraseology. It studies terminology and focuses on how Ukrainian functions in the society, as the state language in particular. The Institute gives much attention to cultivated speech and the history of its literary standard, it studies social and local dialects in the Ukrainian and all-Slavonic contexts along with etymology and onomastics, and it publishes old literary relics and monuments. Dictionaries of all types, i.e. defining, phraseological, spelling, of synonyms etc., feature the Institute’s work. The Ukrainian national lexicography base is being set up to enhance the traditional lexical card index to the level of an electronic version.

The works of the Institute linguists are reputed to be socially significant, analytically deep and authentic.

Since the Institute’s foundation in 1991, two dictionaries, unprecedented in the Ukrainian lexicography, have been published, namely, «The Ukrainian Phraseological Dictionary» in 2 volumes (Kyiv, 1993) and «The Dictionary of Ukrainian Synonyms» (Kyiv, 1999, 2000). Also issued was «The Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary of Scientific Terms» (Vol. 1. Social Studies, Kyiv, 1994; vol. 2. Biology. Chemistry. Medicine. Kyiv, 1996; vol. 3. Mathematics. Physics. Technology. Earth and Space. Kyiv, 1998).

The year 2002 saw «The Peresopnytsia Gospel» of the XVI century and «The Yevseyiv Gospel» of 1283 in print.

A fundamental work entitled «The Grammar of the Modern Literary Ukrainian» has been prepared recently for print by a group of linguists headed by I. Vychovanets.

The 3rd volume of «The Atlas of the Ukrainian Language» was published owing to the financial support from the Shevchenko Academic Society.

A new theoretical quarterly «The Ukrainian Language» was started in 2001 to mark the Institute’s decade.

Another Institute’s journal «The Culture of the Word» keeps informing its readers regularly.

Popular among the radio listeners is the weekly program ‘Slovo’ (The Word) that gives practical recommendations on word usage and spelling, explains the origins of human and geographical names and propagates a taste for refined Ukrainian.

An academic council ‘The Ukrainian Language’ has been set up at the Institute to coordinate the studies carried out by the respective departments of the higher educational institutions of Ukraine.

The Institute is represented at the sections of the International Committee of Slavicic Studies.
