The Institute is headed by NAS academician V. H. Sklyarenko.

It incorporates the departments of general linguistics, general Slavic studies and Eastern Slavic languages, Western and Southern Slavic languages, the Russian language, Romance, Germanic and Baltic languages and structural-and-mathematical linguistics. Their activities are centered on five topical linguistic areas.

The direction ‘Theory and methodology of linguistic studies’ provides theoretical fundamentals of linguistic research, as well as carries out studies in sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, ethnolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, in particular, in issues concerning relationships between language and national mentality, language and cognitive processes.

The principal task of the work done under ‘Comparative studies of Slavic languages’ heading is to investigate problems of the origin, growth and functioning of Eastern, Western, and Southern Slavic languages within the context of general Slavic studies and contrastive studies of various Slavic languages at phonetics, morphology, syntax and word-formation levels. Besides, historical comparative, lexicological, etymological and accentological investigations are done in the field of Ukrainian and other Slavic languages.

Within the area ‘Functioning of the Russian language in Ukraine, contrastive studies of Russian and Ukrainian’, investigations of lexicon, grammar, syntax and stylistics of Ukrainian and other Slavic languages are carried out.

In the area ‘Comparative studies of Romance, Germanic, Baltic and Slavic languages’ comparisons of Romance, Germanic, Baltic and Slavic languages are performed in terms of lexicology and grammar.

Within the direction ‘Principles of developing linguistic (textual and vocabulary) processors’, computerized compiling of new-type Ukrainian dictionaries and Ukrainian grammar is done.

All these areas are represented by linguistic schools, have obtained significant results and are of great significance for further progress of linguistics. Kyiv etymology and accentology schools have won a worldwide recognition.

The Institute is ready to collaborate with all interested academic centers in studying issues of general, Slavic, Romance, Germanic, Baltic, structural-and-mathematical and applied linguistics.
