Principal study areas of the Branch are:
– Franko studies, publishing and profound analysis of both literary and scholarly heritage of Ivan Franko;
– studies of literary process in Western Ukraine in XIX – XX centuries (‘Ruska Triitsia’, ‘Moloda Muza’), Ukrainian literature in foreign countries (‘Prazka Shkola’, ‘New-Yorks’ka Hrupa’ etc.);
– studies of Ukrainian literature in its Slavic and European contexts, comparative studies;
– literature in the area of Slavic studies (Polish, Serbian, Croatian, Sorbian studies) and Germanic studies (Austrian literature);
– current literary process in Ukraine;
– literature theory (intertextuality, study of myths and poetics, narration studies, psychoanalysis, chronotop, study of genres).
The following academic schools work at the Branch:
– I. Franko studies;
– P. Kulish studies;
– studies of poetry.
Research achievements:
The Branch has finished compiling (with comments) four additional volumes of «Collected Works by Ivan Franko» in 50 volumes:
vol. 1 – author’s poetry and poetic translations;
vol. 2 – translations in prose;
vol. 3 – works in literature studies, ethnography and folklore studies.
Also finished is the «Volume of Deletions», a supplement to the «Collected Works by Ivan Franko» in 50 volumes.
The Branch publishes academic works in the «Literary Monuments» series (5 books were published), «Bibliographical Series» (3), «Studies in Literary Criticism» (3), «Franko Studies» (7), «Literary Portraits» (2), «Philology»(3); among them: «Ukrainian Bohemia» by P.
