The Center for Monument Studies was founded on May 23, 1991 in accordance with a joint Resolution of NAS Presidium and the Main Council of Ukrainian Association for Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments.

The principal task of the Center is elaboration of philosophy, theoretical and methodological fundamentals for studying, protecting, preserving and using the objects of Ukrainian cultural heritage.

The Center incorporates the following departments: Historical Monument Studies; Cultural Heritage (including the Sector of Archeological Monuments and Sector of Architectural and Art Monuments); Church Monument Studies; Eastern regional department (Kharkiv); Bakhmut regional department (the town of Chasiv Yar).

The Center studies theoretical issues of Ukrainian monument studies, investigates complex multitype sites, prominent places, the role and significance of these objects in Ukrainian national culture. The Center collaborates with home and foreign academic and culture-and-education institutions, summarizes the experience of monument studies in regions of Ukraine and abroad.

Since its foundation, researchers of the Center implemented the following projects: ‘Historical-and-cultural legacy in spiritual renaissance of Ukrainian people: revealing, studying, protecting’, ‘Issues of monument studies in the context of 2000 years of Christianity’; ‘The role of historical-and-cultural monuments in the spiritual life of present-day Ukraine’ ‘Practical application of theoretical-and-methodological principles of protecting the cultural heritage of Ukraine’; ‘The methodology of the register of necropolis monuments of Ukraine’.

The Center organized or was a co-founder of 49 international and all-Ukrainian scholarly conferences, seminars and round tables.

In 1991-2002 the Center published 80 monographs, collections of academic writings, 69 issues of journal of «Êè¿âñüêà ñòàðîâèíà» («Kyiv Old Times»). 7 volumes of collected academic writings of the Center were published as well as 3 issues of journal «Â³äëóííÿ â³ê³â» («The Echo of Epochs»), study manuals for university students «Óêðà¿íà êîçàöüêà» («The Cossack Ukraine») and «Óêðà¿íñüêå ïàì’ÿòêîçíàâñòâî» («Ukrainian Monument Studies»). Started were the series «Ukrainians beyond the Borders of their Native Land», «Cossack Times», «New Studies of Cossack-Time Monuments in Ukraine», «Archeology Monuments» and «Ukrainian Necropolises».

Specialists of the Center, relying on their research results, give practical assistance to respective institutions in protecting and preserving the monuments of national history and culture, work towards their restitution, promote propagandist activities among people.
