The principal study areas of the Institute are: – mechanics of composite and inhomogeneous media; – mechanics of shell systems; – mechanics of coupled fields in materials and structural elements; – fracture mechanics and fatigue; – dynamics and stability of motion of mechanical systems. The Institute has the following science schools: – science school in continuum mechanics, founded by O. N. Guz in 1967; – numerical methods for solving problems of shells theory for various-level models, founded by Ya. M. Grigorenko in 1970; – science school in dynamic hydroelasticity, established by V. D. Kubenko in 1979; – theory of thermoviscoelastoplastic processes and numerical methods to solve boundary problems, founded by Yu. N. Shevchenko in 1972; – mechanics of stochastic nonhomogeneous media, founded in 1978 by L. P. Khoroshun; – vibration and waves in mechanic-and-electromagnetic continuum structures, founded by M. O. Shulga in 1981; – fracture mechanics of viscoelastic and elastoplastic materials, founded in 1978 by A. O. Kaminsky; – thermomechanics of coupled fields in inelastic materials and structure elements, started in 1981 by V.G.Karnaukhov; – optimization of dynamic processes and control of complex mechanical system, founded by V. B. Larin in 1990. Joint research is possible within the abovementioned principal study areas of S. P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics.
