The Institute of Philosophy was founded in 1946 according to a decree of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since then the Institute was headed by outstanding scholars: M. Omelyanovsky (1946-1952); D. Ostryanin (1952-1962); P. Kopnin (1962-1968); V. Shynkaryk (1968-2001); M. Popovych (2001- till now).

The Institute of Philosophy is zeroed in on the most crucial philosophical issues, coordinates philosophy research in Ukraine. It also provides opportunities for doctoral and post-doctoral studies in the main philosophical subjects. The Institute initiated various research trends, where studies are carried out by real academic schools. Within these areas, the researchers of the Institute are focused on: logic, methodology and philosophy of science (P. Kopnin, M. Popovych, S. Krymsky); issues related to philosophical anthropology (V. Shynkaruk, M. Bulatov, V. Tabachkovsky); ethics, philosophical aesthetics, philosophy of art (V. Ivanov, Ye. Bystrycky, V. Mazepa, V. Malachov); history of philosophy in general and the history of Ukrainian philosophy in particular (V. Nichyk, V. Gorsky, Ja. Stratiy, V. Lyach).

Besides, the Institute of Philosophy does research into political philosophy, eco-philosophy and methodology of natural sciences, philosophy of religion etc. Since its establishment, the Institute has become the leading institution in developing philosophical studies in Ukraine.
