Main research areas of the Institute are history, philosophy, religion, language, literature and culture of Oriental countries; historical, linguistic and cultural relations between Ukraine and Oriental peoples; studies of the social and economic development of countries and regions of the East, as well as study of the history of Ukrainian Orientalism, primarily, Orientalistic heritage of A. Krymsky, Yu. Kulakovsky, B. Kurtz, P. Riechter and others.

The Institute carries out studies of Arabian, Persian and Armenian sources on the history of Eastern Europe; does research into various aspects of the history of Near and Far East countries; works out specific problems of Arabian, Persian and Turkic linguistics. Special attention is given to issues of Islam, Buddhism and other Oriental religions, to the problem of Muslim fundamentalism at the present stage; to traditions and ethnic history of Near and Far East peoples (including Eurasia steppe and the Caucasus); to the role of the present-day Oriental countries in international division of labour; to the issues of political history of the present-day Oriental countries.

In 1997-1999 the Institute issued five volumes of journal «Middle East Courier». 22 issues of academic journal «Oriental World» have been published since 1993; 20 issues of research papers collection «Orientalism» have appeared since 1997; 40 issues of information and analytical bulletin «News of Central Asia and Caucasus» have been issued since 1999 (now this series is offered in a software version); six issues of journal «Ukraine – China: Information and Analytical Survey» have been published since 1999. Researchers of the Present-Day Orient Department support information and analytical website ‘Crimean Tartars. Crimea. Ukraine’ (http://crimeatau.org.ua).

Since 1997 the Institute has been organizing and holding an annual international scholarly conference ‘A.Krymsky Orientalistic Readings’. An academic workshop operates permanently, where presentations are made by Institute’s scholars and specialists of other research institutions and universities.
