Main research areas:
– interdisciplinary studies of cultural heritage as a factor in shaping ethnic and national identity; research into related issues of the history of literature, arts and social ideas;
– research into social, political, and national movements in West Ukrainian lands within the national and European context;
– studies of historical and dialect lexicography; use of lexicographic research for addressing historical and culture issues; preparing a multi-volume comprehensive dictionary of the Ukrainian language of the 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries;
– integrated archaeological studies of the material culture and history of West Ukrainian region since the earliest times through the Middle Ages;
– studies of Ukraine’s relations with neighbouring nations, Poland and Austria in particular; study of the influence of traditions on the formation of national policy.

1. Studies of sources related to the history of medieval and early modern culture (NAS academician Ya. D. Isaievych, Department of medieval history).
2. Studies of the history of Ukrainian literature as a factor of national consolidation (NAS corresponding member M. M. Ilnytsky, Department of Ukrainian literature).
3. Studies of Ukrainian dialects in cultural context (N. V. Khobzei, Department of Ukrainian language).
Studies proposed for practical implementation and joint projects:
1. Formation of civil society foundations and the system of political parties at local, regional and national levels. The role of historical traditions in the theory and practice of current state development.
2. Preparing and publishing teaching aids for secondary schools and universities in the history of Ukraine, its regions and cities.
3. Preparing and publishing collections of documents covering various periods in the history of Ukraine (jointly with universities and archives).
4. Joint excavations with Polish scholarly institutions of archaeological sites in the Ukrainian-Polish border area.
