The Institute is a research institution that specializes in studying a wide range of issues in Ukrainian history. It was set up in 1936 as the Institute of History of Ukraine under the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

The major studies of the Institute in the last decade covered: the role and the place of Ukraine and its history in the last millennium in the context of European and world history; the phenomenon of Ukrainian Cossacks; the genesis and evolution of the idea of Ukrainian statehood and this idea’s practical implementation in the National Revolution of 1658-1676 and the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921. The most significant publications of the Institute over the period are: «Ukrainska Tsentralna Rada» (Ukrainian Central Council), 2 vols., 1996-97; «Vse pro Ukrainu» (All about Ukraine), 1998; «Narysy z istorii dyplomatii Ukrainy» (Essays in History of Ukrainian Diplomacy), 2001; «Kyiv: Entsyklopedychne Vydannia» (Kyiv: an Encyclopedic Edition), 2001; a documentary publication «Ukrainsky Natsionalno-Vyzvolny Rukh, Berezen-Lystopad 1917» (The Ukrainian National Liberation Movement, March-November 1917), 2003; «Ukrainska Kultura Drugoi Polovyny XVII – XVIII St.» (Ukrainian Culture in the Second Half of the XVII-XVIII Centuries), vol.3 of «Istoria Ukrainskoi Kultury» (A History of Ukrainian Culture) in 5 vols., 2003, etc.

Published were detailed studies and collections of documents about the famines in Ukraine in 1923-21, 1932-33, and 1946-47. Research was carried out concerning Ukraine’s and Ukrainians’ contribution to the World War II, the history of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), Polish-Ukrainian conflict in Volyn region in 1943-44 and some other aspects of the topic.
