The principal research areas of the Institute are: – fundamental and applied research in space, astrophysical studies of space objects, including those in ranges inaccessible from the Earth surface; – development of strategy and principles of employing space instruments in Universe studies with a view to solving research and practical tasks in the interests of national economy; – development and testing in space of technological processes and scientific equipment for space research; – development of new principles and improvement of existing systems for navigation and control of space-vehicle motion, for monitoring the Earth and space and producing space information systems; – working out proposals concerning concepts and strategies of space programs; – expert assessment of proposals to and projects in planned research efforts and works done, organization of research projects competitions; – organization of conferences, meetings, discussions and other activities on the most important issues of Institute’s research priorities. The list of science schools: 1. Systems analysis and control theory (head – NAS academician V. M. Kuntsevich, Dr. Techn., Prof., Honored Worker in Science and Technology of Ukraine). 2. Physics of space (heads: Prof. Yu. P. Ladikov-Royev, Dr. Techn., Honored Worker in Science and Technology of Ukraine, Prof. V. M. Ivchenko, Dr. Techn., Prof. O. K. Cheremnykh, Dr. Techn.). The Institute proposes for cooperative commercialization: – Economic-and-mathematical and multi-criterion expert methods for scenario-based branch and regional planning; – NORDIS-VARIANT network-based data processing complex for receiving, providing integrated scientific processing and accumulating very large volumes of space information in a database through the Internet, followed by its distribution to users. It can be adapted for accumulating and processing large volumes of textual and graphic data presented in various generally accepted formats as the service center for customized information processing and other turnkey projects, with subscribers’ access through a protected Internet connection. – A technique for atmospheric correction of high-resolution space pictures in the optical range. It is produced as a module of ENVI package of image expansion. The technique can be adapted for signal-filtration under parametric distortions of different physical nature. – A Grid-based information system for satellite data processing.
