The principal study areas of the Institute are:

– physical fundamentals, principles, methods and systems of optical information recording. Development of technologies for long-term storage of digital information;

– theoretical backgrounds and applied methods for developing computer information-and-analytical systems, investigation and development of information protection methods in computer systems and networks. Methods and systems of decision-making support;

– development of methods and a system of computer networks for data banks, databases and knowledge bases, systems of computer information mass distribution;

– development of systems for sound and image reproduction from rarity information carriers, systems for information recording with non-destructive and tomography methods.

The following science schools function at the Institute:

– fundamentals of information recording, storing and distributing (headed by Prof. V. V. Petrov, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, NAS corresponding member, Dr. Tech. Sc.);

– viability and security of complex systems, including the theory and development of territory-distributed information-computer systems (headed by Prof. O. G. Dodonov, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Dr. Tech. Sc.);

– system analysis including decision-making support, diagnostics and reliability (Prof. V. G. Totsenko, Dr. Tech. Sc.);

– development of fundamentals for interconnecting nature phenomena and objects by designing a new mathematical description via hypercomplex number systems methods and developing the integral equation theory oriented towards tomographic investigations and structures (Prof. M. V. Synkov, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Dr. Tech. Sc.).

The Institute proposes for cooperative commercialization:

– a technology of manufacturing media for long-term information storage in a digital form;

– a technology of recording information on emergencies in Ukraine;

– methods and mechanisms for providing information security;

– a program system for simulating the organizational structures of the State government bodies;

– a support and decision making system to control the processes of preventing emergencies and eliminating their impacts;

– a technology and system for integrated planning of target-oriented humanitarian, social, economic or technical programs;

– a technology and system for the reliability analysis and synthesis of information transfer systems;

– a technology and system for supporting independent expert assessments.
