The Institute was set up in 1936. It has one branch outside Kyiv – that in Kharkiv. As of 01.01.2003, the Institute had 13 scientific departments incorporated in 4 branches according to the areas of research, namely:

– branch of the economic theory and history (departments: philosophy and theory of economic studies; theoretical problems of economic regulation; financial and credit regulation; history of national economy and economic thought; economic relations of Ukraine and Russia);

– branch of economic problems of scientific and technical progress and industrial potential (departments: that of industrial potential; efficiency of investments and reproduction of fixed capital);

– branch of agrarian problems (departments: economic relations in agribusiness; resource potential of agribusiness; socio-economic development of rural areas);

– branch of labor economics, demographic economics and living standards of the population (departments: labor economics and population employment; social sphere, income and living standards of the population; demographic economics).

Research areas authorized by the NAS Presidium resolution of 05.09.2001, according to which the Institute is the leading organization in the development of the abovementioned field of economic science and has renowned scientific schools, are:

– developing the theory of formation of highly effective market economy, mechanisms of its regulation and maintenance of sustainable development in the postindustrial era. Elaborating scientific principles of new internal and foreign policy of the state. Studying the economic history and the history of socio-economic thought in Ukraine (NAS academician I. I. Lukinov, NAS corresponding member L. K. Bezchasny, Dr. Econ., Prof. A. I. Danylenko, Dr. Econ., Prof. V. I. Kononenko);

– issues of effective functioning of industrial potential of the country, its technological updating and increasing its competitiveness. Methods to form the innovation and investment policy and optimize reproduction processes (NAS academician O. M. Alymov, NAS corresponding member M. S. Herasymchuk);

– fundamentals of the theory of agrarian relations in transitive economy, ways of ensuring food security of the country, intensive reproduction of the resource potential of agribusiness, formation of a new living environment in rural areas (NAS academician O. M. Onishchenko, academician of UAAS V. M. Tregobchuk, UAAS corresponding members B. Yo. Paskhaver and I. V. Prokopa);

– advanced forms of social infrastructure, methods and mechanisms of overcoming demographic crisis, poverty and unemployment, training of competitive manpower, improving the stimulating factors of increase in labor productivity, improving life conditions of the population (Dr. Econ., Prof. V. M. Novikov, Dr. Econ., Prof. D. P. Boginia, Dr. Econ., Prof. V. S. Steshenko).
