Main research areas of the Institute are:

– theory of partial differential equations and operators, constructive and geometrical theory of functions, theory of stochastic processes and mathematical statistics;

– solid body dynamics, stability and control theory, rock mechanics;

– simulation, identification and recognition of control systems.

The following scientific schools work at the Institute:

– partial differential equations, founded by academicians of AS of Ukr. SSR I.I.Daniluk and Ya.B.Lopatinskiy;

– complex analysis, conformal mapping and approximation theory, founded by corresponding member of AS of Ukr. SSR G.D.Suvorov;

– probability theory and mathematical statistics, founded by corresponding member of AS of Ukr. SSR I.I.Gikhman;

– analytical mechanics, founded by NAS corresponding member P.V.Kharlamov;

– mathematical and engineering issues of cybernetics and discrete mathematics, founded by Prof. A.M.Bogomolov, Dr. Tech Sc.

The Institute proposes for cooperative implementation:

– development and investigation of mathematical models of heat-and-mass transfer and their application with a view to the improvement of heat-and-power equipment control;

– elaboration of mathematical methods for solving applied problems of control of satellites performing the Earth remote sensing;

– investigation of coal heterogeneity effect on the process of strain redistribution in the excavation neighborhood under mining operations at great depths.
