The scientific activities of the Institute of Mathematics are focused on further development of mathematical sciences in the following areas: theory of ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations, theory of nonlinear oscillations and dynamical systems, probability theory and mathematical statistics, theory of functions, complex analysis, methods of functional and nonlinear analysis, investigation of algebraic and topological structures, analytical mechanics and dynamics of special mechanical systems, numerical methods for investigating mechanical and physical problems.

Science schools that originated at the Institute and work in the theory of differential equations and nonlinear mechanics, mathematical physics, algebra, probability theory and mathematical statistics, functional analysis, theory of functions and mathematical problems in mechanics are well known in the world and recognized in the scientific community. Nine of the thirteen mathematics schools functioning in Ukraine are developing and working at the Institute.

Being the leading Ukrainian organization in the field of mathematical sciences, the Institute of Mathematics coordinates research in mathematics in Ukraine. Having a strong research potential (nearly 80 doctors of science, 80 candidates of science (PhDs), numerous postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers), it permanently supplies leading educational and research institutions of Ukraine with highly skilled teachers and researchers.

The Institute of Mathematics is interested in joint scientific activities directed towards solving problems in mathematics, development and investigation of new mathematical models in problems of natural, social sciences and humanities.
